Jorge Mejia (b. Oct. 25, 1999, Tegucigalpa, Honduras) is a Multi-disciplinary visual artist, illustrator, motion media artist and animator with experience in digital content creation. Mejia has worked as a multimedia designer at Vogue Hong Kong, where he created tasteful illustrations and motion graphics that delivered a world-class style and quality for both their print magazine and social media.
In addition to his animation and multimedia background, Mejia has a passion for dance and performance art. It is through his multi-character alter-ego, BALATRO, that he aims to merge both of these worlds together. Appropriating the name given to public entertainers in ancient Roman times; BALATRO is a multimedia and cross-platform project that challenges the role of public entertainers and their relation to media in our post-modern world. Through drag, clowning, contemporary dance, music, video and improvisational interactions, Mejia creates and embodies multi-faceted characters that destabilise boundaries of nationality, culture, sexuality, and gender, and ultimately beckons, what it means to be human in our contemporary moment. His artwork was recently exhibited in Paris, France for which he created a multimedia installation that features his painting, music and video art.
Born and raised in Tegucigalpa; Honduras. Mejía graduated with a B.F.A. in Animation from The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD Hong Kong) were he was professionally trained in 2D animation and motion graphics. Then he graduated with a Master of Science in Multimedia and Entertainment Technology at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK Poly U), focused on psychological research of human identity and gender through art.
